Destination - Carrion De Los Condes
Distance - 19 km
Hours of travel - 7:30 - 12:00 - includes hot coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice and a chocolate croissant break
Terrain - flat dusty gravel road - I loved it but others were not fans; go figure
Weather - warm in the morning and overcast and cool in the afternoon
Nature - there is always a rooster crowing somewhere
Misadventure - Nothing of note
It was a short and dusty trail today. I loved it and felt like I was hitting my stride by the end. Others thought it was horrible. You can tell the prairie people today.
Our friend Mike from Virginia messages us and recommended we stay with the singing nuns today, so we went straight to the monastery Alburgue and checked in today.
After a stop to buy new shoes for Dee and the pharmacy to stock up on bandaids, cold medicine and tissues we found a stop for lunch. Paella is not getting old for me yet, but Dee and Wendy had pizza. We all had a burger with bacon for supper! We were joined by Edith, Otto and we met 22 year old Mike, also from Winnipeg. An interesting and well spoken young man (he studied communications; we got to do a little marketing talk, so I was thrilled)
The Alburgue we are in is run by Four Augustine nuns and two Greek Orthodox nuns. We received the warmest welcome (complete with warm sweet tea and cookies that tasted like graham wafers). We attended a beautifu short service in their wonderful church. After the service, they invited pilgrims for a time of singing, where they briefly explained their mission. During that time we went around the room and introduced ourselves and our reason for walking the Camino. There were people from all over the world. And the reasons were varied yet very familiar. A lady from Finland put it very eloquently 'sometimes you have to travel far to find what you have at home'. Our friend Liam from Ireland, whom is writing about the Camino said he thinks that he had to return to the roots of mankind to find his humanity. The answers were moving and real. Part of our Way.
Intricate stonework on the outside
Tomorrow is a big day so we are tucked into bed and hopeful for a good night sleep.
We are getting closer to our destination with each step, and enjoying the journey times.
Note - in Carrion, the sign says the Camino is just over 400km. That is if you went by car (who does that?) We are close to half way and on track!
Cheer of the day from Wendy - cheers to getting to go shoe shopping so that Dee could get some new shoes; she can now leave the hostel. And a big cheer to having a hamburger with bacon!
Hi to my synchro girls- I am missing all of you as you start your season. I hope you are stretching and keeping up to me on my journey. If you or your parents are on Facebook, post on my page how far you have travelled in the contest. I hear some of you have caught up to me, so this will give me inspiration to keep walking. And stretching. I need you to nag me back about stretching! Dream, shine, sparkle.
