Day 26 - Mountains, Cities, Vineyards

Destination - Cacabellos
Distance - 28km
Hours of walking - 8:00 - 4:00
Terain - rocks and pavement
Weather - so perfect for hiking
Nature - pine trees, vineyards, roosters and dogs
Misadventure - Lots of dogs behind fences make for nervous pilgrims

We started the morning with an amazing breakfast from Philipa. Breakfasts are not always spectacular and so this one was appreciated. Philipa spoke a little English in a bright, animated and caring fashion.

Beautiful breakfast waiting for us
Our wonderful hostess serving fantastic coffee

We finally had a day of weather that allowed us to enjoy the mountains of Spain. We put in a big day and enjoyed the walk. We went from the top of a mountain, through some amazing towns and then back into wine country. It's amazing in 28kms the change in scenery. It was a tough day; lots of pavement on our feet but we ended in a very cute town and were treated to a private room with there beds and our our own shower.

Early morning mountain path

The road was rocky, but I decided there was no place I would rather be at that moment. The journey is amazing and we know that it is a gift to be on it. It still seems surreal at times that this is where are and how we get to spend our days

The bridge at Molinesca - the water was so still
Bread is everywhere

Tempted by a bus stop on Ponferrado - it never showed up so we walked into the city

Back to the land of grapes

Are we there yet - note the stones behind - messages from pilgrims

Bed looks so good

For our fit bit friends, we are averaging around 35,000 steps in a day - according to my iPhone. Yesterday on the hike to Cruz de Ferro, it said we walked up 87 floors. All in a day's work!!

Cheer of the day from Wendy- getting a ride down the mountain and then seeing Father Tom and having coffee with Patty. Always a pilgrim friend when you need one.
