Sept 13
Destination - Roncevalles
Distance - 19km
Hours of walking - approx 5.5 hrs
Terrain - straight up, straight down, mostly natural trails, grass and rocks
Weather - Saskatchewan winds x 100, some rain and cool
Nature - cows, two varieties of sheep (with bells) and some horses we thought of lassoing
Misadventure - Ari taught us how to find the slippery clay sections
We woke up the to most gorgeous sunrise in the mountains. Pictures, or at least mine, do not capture the splendor of the moment. It didn't last long but was worth waiting to set off for.
The trek was gorgeous even with the gale force winds. We all walked like drunken sailors as the wind would gust and push us around.
Yes Blaire, we sang for you in the mountains. A wonderful part of the morning was seeing the sheep grazing in the mountains. They all had bells on them, creating a symphony for us. Around 10:00am, came along a breakfast truck, complete with fruit and hot coffee. A welcome treat.
When you go up, you need to go down eventually. We opted for the steeper, shorter route down. It was a tricky section with a little rain, which caused Ari to discover the slickness of clay.
Arriving in Rocanvalles, we opted for the municipal Alburge in an old monastery. They have completely renovated it and it is very well done and clean. We met some of our 'Orrison family' for a glass of wine and then for the pilgrim meal.
Cheer of the day from Wendy - we love Spain! We finally found a place windier than Saskatchewan!
