Sept 11
After a train and bus ride from Bayonne to St. Jean Pied du Port, we are officially Pilgrims and transportation will now be by foot!We had a relaxing morning as we didn't have to catch the train until 11:00. We found a bakery for breakfast and enjoyed some great coffee.
The train/ bus ride was beautiful. Southern France is lush and very green. It was very strange being on a bus with people with the same destination as us.
We then registered at the Camino office and officially became pilgrims.
We will carry our passport with us and get it stamped at each stop. The owner of our hostel has done the Camino (or parts of it) every year for 60 years!
It was a relaxing day spent looking around this beautiful village and enjoying the warm weather. Tomorrow is our first day hiking with the destination of Orison being 10km away (yes Jasmin- only 10km). We heard today the first kilometre is the hardest we will do on the entire trip. We are rested and prepared (?!)
Cheer of the Day from Wendy - the best part of the day was meeting Edith, a young German lady. She is lovely and we spent the majority of the day with her and will depart with her tomorrow. She is fun to visit with and has lots of great stories. Our first pilgrim family member. She is fluent in French, which made our day much less stressful.
